I worked discount retail through high school and college and I moved a lot of heavy materials, most often lots of 32-pound cases of paint, on a regular basis. I managed to stay healthy and uninjured. The Las Vegas Badger isn’t quite so fortunate.
Today, I had to downstack over 9,000 pounds of groceries so the [...]

Let’s play pundit….
It looks like there’s going to be a health care reform bill, a weak one without a public option or a Medicare buy-in, for which the only vehicle for driving down costs is an insurance exchange. Let’s do a thought experiment inspired by Jonathan Chait of the New Republic:
Why can’t people [...]

When given the chance to think of the four worst places self-described spokesjerk Andy should go after being fired from Blue Cross Blue Shield for well, telling the truth, he came up with: Blackwater, Walmart, Goldman Sachs and Faux Fox News.
Where do you think he should apply?

If there are two elements that I would suggest never be combined they would be Wall Street and health care. Clearly the people who stole billions from American taxpayers are not to be trusted with the basic health and well being of those same citizens.
From 24/7 Wall St:
Let Wal-Mart take over the creation of an [...]

This is the letter that “Stock” is referring to in the comments:
I work for Wal-Mart (the evil empire) and was invited to my supervisor’s office yesterday to be “sold” on the new computerized schedule practice that will go into effect on July 25, 2009 at the store where I work. I was informed that this [...]

Remember in President Barack Hussein Obama’s speech to Congress where he said this week: “[W]e can’t have large businesses and individuals who can afford coverage game the system by avoiding responsibility to themselves or their employees.”
He might have been starring directly at Senator Max Baucus (R-Montana). He was sure as hell talking about Walmart.
Baucus has [...]

I’ll be spending my Labor Day weekend with my family in Marietta, Ohio, and I expect part of the time will be at the Washington County Fair. Like most American holidays, Labor Day has become yet another vacation day to burn meat on charcoal fires.
Unions would like us to take a few minutes to consider [...]

Socialized medicine better come really soon or a lot of Walmart workers are going to have shorter lives. From BNet Pharma:
Walmart today axed half the branded drugs it covers in an employee health benefit plan, according to a letter leaked to BNET.
Previously, Walmart’s health benefits covered about 260 brand name drugs — from Abilify [...]

Jonathan has been on top of Walmart’s silly tax grab in championing President Barack Hussein Obama’s health care plan for employer mandates, but I’m impressed how the glow lasted less than a nanosecond. Walmart got no boost in any sector that I can see.
Conservative Andrew Sullivan links to Stephen Brainbrige’s analysis with approval:
Wal-Mart has been [...]

Q. Can lower level Walmart workers ever expect to retire?
A. New York Times, 2/17/06:
In his response to the store manager who asked about retiree health benefits, Mr. Scott wrote: “Quite honestly, this environment isn’t for everyone. There are people who would say, ‘I’m sorry, but you should take the risk and take billions [...]

Steven Burd’s piece in the Wall Street Journal seems ever so sensible, even reasonable, but falls flat because Burd, the CEO of Safeway, pretends that the millions his company spends every year on marketing are wasted.
Stock holders would not be pleased to hear that.
Burd wants to blame unhealthy Americans.
Effective health-care reform must meet two objectives: [...]

How are we going to get the universal health care that Walmart once claimed it wanted when the company wants to make money off our broken health care system?

You know how this started: Walmart is releasing new healthcare coverage numbers today. Someone deep in the bowels of Edelman called the Washington Post and said, “Hey, we have these new health care coverage numbers. We’ll give them to you early if you write a puff piece for our client.” Then [...]

If you bothered to read all of Charles Platt’s New York Post article on his time in the trenches at Wally World you might think my last post was a little unfair because the money quote in my post, the one where he wrote that he couldn’t live on Walmart’s salary, has a second part [...]

Apparently NY Times reporter Michael Barbaro has decide to return to his old Walmart beat to allow Lee Scott to pull the wool over his eyes one more time.
The way Walmart does this is by putting out the same bogus statistics it always offers when it wants to show how well it treats its employees. [...]
