Don’t look for any great session of back slapping and exchange of rude party jokes anytime soon, but there does appear to be some light showing through a barely cracked door in Chicago over the living-wage issue. From WMAQ: The détente between Mayor Daley and Chicago Federation of Labor President Dennis Gannon — which helped […]

I have in the past and continue to applaud Wal-Mart’s ecological/environmental efforts, regardless of the fact that the changes are motivated by financial gain and not any altruistic revelation. But I am troubled by this story from Fast Company: Recent articles about Home Depot and Wal-Mart have detailed the efforts these chains are making to […]
There are sound stages on Hollywood’s back lots smaller than Bentonvile’s behemoths, so it’s no surprise that budding video talent has been sneaking cameras in at odd hours. And now for the midnight show at the Wally Plex featuring jayjacobson14. Jeff Hess: Have Coffee Will Write.
It’s reported in todays New York Times that China has passed a sweeping new labor law. The law, which is to take effect in 2008, also enhances the role of the Communist Party’s monopoly union and allows collective bargaining for wages and benefits. It softens some provisions that foreign companies said would hurt China’s competitiveness, […]
Stymied by Tucson, Arizona’s, big-box ordinance, Wal-Mart is circulating petitions to repeal a portion of the law restricting food and beverage sales to no more than 10 percent of a store’s total space.. The company only needs 11,615 signatures to get on the ballot. Opponents are already seeking to block the move from ever reaching […]
Sometimes you just can’t make this stuff up. Driving to the coffee house this morning I hear yet another consumer horror story from China. This time it’s farm-raised shrimp, eels and fish laced with dangerous chemicals. And then I find out after my first cup of Blue Moon that the Scottsdale, Arizona Wal-Mart is selling […]
Well, the ad actually says Wal-Mart sends dollars to China and China sends weapons to Afghanistan. I agree the ad is thought provoking. But it’s not one I personally approve of. It reminds me of the tactics of fear used by the Bush administration to bring our nation to war in Iraq.
Blogger Golbguru at Money, Matter, and More Musings asks the question: what are your reasons to shop (or not shop) at Wal-Mart? What reasons do you cite when you encourage or discourage your friends/family to use Wal-Mart? His own reasons? Some things are just outright affordable at Wal-Mart and if we buy them from other […]
No, not jobs at Wal-Mart. Those low-paying, Mc Jobs are growing every day. No, the jobs zapped by Wal-Mart are the kinds of jobs people used to depend upon to buy cars and houses and college educations for their kids; manufacturing jobs. From the Economic Policy Institute: The world’s biggest retailer, U.S.-based Wal-Mart was responsible […]
Bus loads of union members and human rights advocates from several southern states converged on Clinton, Mississippi, yesterday to protest Wal-Mart’s low wages and continued reliance on a public-sector healthcare bailout for its workers. State Representative Erik Flemming (D-2nd) said the state shouldn’t have to pick up the slack for Wal-Mart. From WLBT: “Everyone asks […]

Wal-Mart asks: can a lightbulb change the world? If you haven’t seen the Wal-Mart tv commerical for compact fluorescent bulbs you can view it here. If everyone of Wal-Mart’s 180 million customers bought one of these light bulbs it would save the customer money and help the environment. It would be like putting the equivalent […]
Wal-Mart is female and she has been blessed by God. We are rejoicing today over the fact that Wal-Mart is coming back home! In the fall of 2006, Operation Save America joined several other ministries in a battle for the heart and soul of America’s largest corporation — Wal-Mart. Over the years she had become […]
Seldom do local protests get any news coverage. This one shows an example that got at least one story: NJ.com Organizers said the rally was one of 25 that took place across the country as part of a national day of action coordinated by the group Wake Up Wal-Mart.com. Wal-Mart is the nation’s largest private […]
