Some of it is expensive plastic crap.
One used to be able to buy a Sony walkman for about $50 and play an infinite number of cassettes. Then came the portable CD which is even cheaper and provides better fidelity.
Now you can get a (fragile) Ipod with compressed sound encoding for $350+. If something happens to it, your entire carefully assembled collection goes poof!.

This is an observation my dad has made many times. He doesn’t think the minimal sound quality increase has been worth the change since the advent of the cassette tape.
I don’t own an iPod for just the reason you cite. It’s too fragile and expensive. For $350 I want something that’s going to last 10 years, not 10 months (or less).
