OUR WORKING POOR…

Sometimes not owning a TV is a bad thing. This past week I missed the POV report Waging A Living on PBS last Tuesday and it is a show I would have watched. PBS ought to archive and post shows like the for streaming.

The comments on Barbara’s Blog are good and the reviews in the New York Times and The National Reveiw are instructive.

Democracy Now has four podcasts (with transcripts) associated with the program:

Chicago’s Big Box Ordinance

Poverty In New York City

History Of Worker’s Movements In The U.S.

Beyond A Living Wage

There is also a NOW interview with Barabara Ehrenreich linked.

    Jeff,
It’s hard to believe that there are those who believe these people are being punished by god. We need to realize that a sizable portion of our society is an illness, accident or paycheck away from being like the people shown on POV. It is very discouraging that the richest country in the world cares so little about so many of its citizens.

    Shalom Peter,

That’s true, you’re absolutely right. I’m all for personal responsibility, but we also have societal responsibilities for the orphan, the widow and the stranger at our gate.

    B’shalom,

    Jeff

    Shalom Reverend,

First, thank you for stopping in, for reading and, most importantly, for taking the time to leave a comment. It’s all about the conversation.

You should feel free to express yourself in our comments, that way everyone gets to share in the message and the exchange.

    B’shalom,

    Jeff

  7. Of all the subjects discussed in the Bible, money, poverty, love and fatih rate right up in the top ten.
God has given us a set of rules to follow and for some reason, over time we have taken upon ourselves as either a denominational faction, individual or entire breakoff “relgion” to redifine those rules as they fit to our personal lives, we make them convenient for us.
I have heard so many agruments read so many research reports I am sick to my stomach.
40 years ago president Johnson declared a national war on poverty and one of the recent articles I was reading started with this line, “as we celebrate the 40th year of the war on poverty”. What kind of celebration is that. There are tons of reasons for the poverty issues in America, but the first step to a solution I believe is to remember we have rules, given to us by God and we don’t get to choose which ones we like and don’t like. That means pay a man a fair days wages, if you loan someone some money you don’t get to charge interest, that means if the person working for you is really down in a hard way you have to pay him daily so he can feed his family that day.
I could go on, but I better save some for later.
    In His Grip, Reverend Thomas
