Coming on the news that Walmart is no longer the No. 1 global retailer comes a parallel story that in one market, the Bentonvile Behemoth has dropped to No. 3. There are qualification and plenty of wiggle room, of course, but Katherine Peralta, reporting in Grocery wars: Harris Teeter takes top spot... for The Charlotte Observer writes:
Harris Teeter reclaimed the No. 1 spot and Food Lion edged past Wal-Mart Supercenters in the latest market share rankings for Charlotte’s highly competitive grocery scene. Despite their moves up in the rankings, Harris Teeter and Food Lion both saw their market-share percentages slip, as new competitors such as Publix took a bigger piece of the market, according to the rankings from Chain Store Guide, a sales-tracking firm.
Kind of like the Republican primaries where Donald Trump wouldn't have had a chance if the ego-driven politicians had much earlier come to some kind of accord and agreed that all but one would drop out (like that was ever going to happen).
