IS MAJOR MAJOR WORKING FOR WAL-MART…?

One of our Wal-Moles emailed me this morning to let me know that a vacation policy announced nearly a year ago is now being enforced. The gist is this: work less than 34-hours/week? Vacation time? Don’t make us laugh.

From the Wal-Mart employee website (password required):

Vacation Pay

You accumulate paid vacation based on your full-time length of service with the Company as follows:

• 1 average week after 1 year of continuous service
• 2 average weeks after 2 years of continuous service
• 3 average weeks after 7 years of continuous service
• 4 average weeks after 15 years of continuous service

Peak-Time Associates receive one average week of vacation after two years of continuous service.

Vacation time must be used within one year from the time it becomes available.

In order to be classified as Full-Time in the Company’s payroll system, an Associate must regularly work or have worked at least:

• 34 hours per week, or
• 28 hours per week if Full-Time prior to January 1, 2002, or
• 20 hours per week if Full-Time prior to September 1, 1979.

Note: Logistics Associates, please see your Personnel Representative.

Our Wal-Mole adds: In order to qualify for each classification listed above, you must remain continuously employed as full time. If you go to Peak-Time status and then return to Full-Time status, you must work at least 34 hours in order to be classified as full time and all new hires are kept under 34 hours.

What has changed is now they only hire part time help. No more full timers are employed unless they are were grandfathered in.

The tricky wording is that part-time workers receive one week of vacation after two years. What it doesn’t tell you is that that is all they will ever get. Most part-timers think they are receiving accumluated vacations like full-timers. But if they call the home office they discover that that is not the case.

Once again, Wal-Mart is sneaky about taking everythng away.

In the words of Ohio’s Republican legislator Paul Gillmore: [Wal-Mart] demonstrates a clear pattern of deception.
