Tom Coughlin Wal-Mart Ex-Vice-Chair Must Be Resentenced

Tom Coughlin’s sentence of 27 months of home detention, 33 months of additional probation and $500,000 fine was too lenient says a US Circuit Court of Appeals.

Coughlin pleaded guilty to five counts of wire fraud and one count of filing false tax returns — all felonies — in January 2006.

He could have been sentenced to 28 years in prison. Coughlin, who is worth $50 million, was found by the first judge to be unable to afford the fine. Wal-Mart is reported to be trying to break a $15 million retirement pact with Coughlin.

How can Wal-Mart charge “always low prices” and still provide $15 million in retirement benefits to its executives?
