BECOMING HERMIT CRABS IN WAL-MART SHELLS…

This seems to be the week for stories about Sam Walton’s entrepreneurial heirs breathing life into abandoned Wal-Mart stores. This time the story comes from the Daily Herald in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.

Two businesses there are reworking the former home of cheap plastic crap from China and making it more American.

With Peebles anticipating opening in November and Tractor Supply Company filing its building permit to construct a business, new life is coming to the old Wal-Mart building.

Peebles announced in a press release this week its new store will open Nov. 15. Tractor Supply filed a building permit with the city Monday, Planning and Development Director George W. Gurley Jr. said Friday.

Beginning construction on the Tractor Supply Store is about two weeks off, Gurley said.

Peebles, a department store that sells family clothing, is fashioning a 20,000-square-foot store on the left side of the building. It also includes a home decor and fragrance department.

Tractor Supply will take a 28,560-square-foot area of the old Wal-Mart on the right side of the building. It also plans to have a 20,000-square-foot outdoor display area and a permanent equipment display area.

Peebles and Tractor Supply should help other businesses in the area, the mayor said. “When people come into Peebles and Tractor Supply, both popular places, they will see the Mayflower and Ryan’s and that will lead them to see other things in town. That’s the way it works – one thing comes in and brings other customers in as well.”

Like Mr. Miller, I wish the people of Roanoke Rapids all the best.

The comment about the reuse of an old Wal-Mart store in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina is applicable to Minden, LA. Tractor Supply and STAGE are sharing an old WM building in almost the same way you describe.  Hope it helps our town, also.  Doc

    Shalom Doc,

First, thank you for stopping in, for reading and, most importantly, for taking the time to write a comment. It's all about the conversation.

How long was the store in Minden open before Wal-Mart closed it? Do you know what the net loss in jobs was when Wal-Mart closed the regular stores and replaced them with one supercenter? And how much further do you have to drive to get to the supercenter than you did ot get to the regular store?

    B'shalom,

    Jeff
