HOW MANY STORES…? HOW MANY HOURS…?

The very brief note from the Selma, Alabama, Times Journal concerning the change in hours at a Walmart, specially as the company prepares for its most important sales season, raises several questions in my mind, not the least of which is:

Does this decision reflect a local, regional or national dynamic?

Wal-Mart here will have new hours beginning Nov. 1.

The 24-hour store will close at midnight and open at 6 a.m. each day.

The store has notified the public by posting a yellow sign on all entrances.

“This is strictly a business deal,” said Anna Taylor, spokeswoman for Wal-Mart. “Based on the customer shopping patterns we believe we can meet customer shopping schedules. We are always evaluating our business model and we believe this will help offer a faster, friendlier shopping experience during our hours of peak shopping.”

This change in hours of operation is specific to Selma. Many stores nationally will continue to operate 24 hours.

“Many stores?” What does many mean?

The cut is more severe in Montgomery where, the paper reports:

Some Montgomery stores had opted to close at 11 p.m.

Sounds like belt tightening to me. or maybe it’s a way to let night crews get some work done by relieving them of the task of chasing down all those teenagers with video cameras who are now going to be really pissed.

I for one would be relieved if all of them went down over night, well, over night.

Yes there are so many late night walmart excursions made by teenagers running amok that they can hardly be counted. But there are also theft problems and issues with keeping the store cleaned/properly maintained.

If anyone hasn’t read the other comment i posted a few back, i work in the photolab. We’ve experienced A HUGE amount of theft overnight since i’ve been there. Goodness knows we can’t rely on managers or even [gasp] the surveillance cameras to catch the baddies.

It’s a good decision that everyone can support.

    Shalom Cody,

    That’s true. You’re absolutely correct.

    B’shalom,
