WILL 2010 BE WALMART’S CHICAGO YEAR…?

Chicago is recovering from its disappointment after losing the 2016 Olympics and Mayor Daley, faced with a shrinking tax and jobs base is going back to the Walmart well. I wrote about the preliminary shots earlier, but the issue is gaining momentum.

From the Chicago Tribune:

The mayor reignited the Wal-Mart controversy last week , announcing after a City Council meeting that he wants aldermen, the unions, community members and Wal-Mart officials to reach accord to allow more of the giant retail stores to open within city limits. But Wal-Mart officials quickly shot down the idea, saying they won’t negotiate on wages and benefits.

Taking questions on the topic for the first time since the retailer turned thumbs-down, Daley was asked if it’s time for him to try to broker an agreement. Aldermen blocking new Wal-Mart stores cite pay and a lack of benefits as concerns.

“You know who’s going to start brokering? All these religious leaders,” Daley said, gesturing to more than a dozen pastors who joined him at a church in the Burnside neighborhood to announce that congregations around the city will host anti-violence programs for high school students during winter break. “They have members of their congregation that can’t get work. They can’t get work. They can’t even get decent jobs, and they’re asking for that.”

I think the mayor would do well consider Freddrenna Lyle understanding of a decent job.

Many Walmarts across north America don’t even have unions. This continued corporate bullying by Walmart is unacceptable.

What irks me is that there should be more regulation from the government side of things. The injustice has to end.

    Shalom Vivian,

First, thank you for stopping in, for reading and, most importantly, for taking the time to share your views. Building our community demands our conversations.

The situation is worse than you think. There are no Walmarts anywhere other than in Communist China that hire union workers.

    Now that’s irony.

    B’shalom,

    Jeff
