Remember, Gillmor is a Republican.

Here’s the follow up to my post this morning. From Bloomberg:

Wal-Mart Stores Inc.’s new leases with bank-branch tenants are “a smoking gun” that Congress should weigh as it considers a bill to ban the world’s largest retailer from operating a bank, a lawmaker said.

“Wal-Mart’s attempts to own a bank run opposite of their statements to Congress,” U.S. Representative Paul Gillmor, a senior member of the House Financial Services Committee, said at a news conference on Capitol Hill today. “They demonstrate a clear pattern of deception.”

Gillmor, who backs a bill to bar new non-financial companies from operating banks, cited an e-mail from Wal-Mart to its bank tenants that gave the retailer the right to make home- equity loans, install automated-teller machines and offer other financial services.

[Emphasis added]

Can you imagine what dealing with Wal-Mart would be like if you fell behind on your loan payments? I shudder to think about it.

Update: From MarketWatch:

Wal-Mart wants to sell mortgages, consumer loans and equity lines to shoppers.

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Your should take a look at the WalMart applications. They have 3 age ranges on their applications. They also have several listings(12) asking if you, your spouse or child receive anyone of the the 12 listed aids.

I was hired on a Saturday with 11 others. Our first day of work was on Monday at 7:15 to 4:30. I was brought into the personal office and told my temporary position had ended, I had an hour and a half left to go. I was not given a reason why, I was told I did not do anything wrong. My position had ended even though I did not compete my shift. I signed my separation paper but asked if I had too and was told yes. I asked 4 a money order instead of cash. I asked to talk to Rick (hiring person in charge) to see if he would give me reason as to why I was let go. I have never been let go from any job I have worked and I have worked at about 6 different jobs over a 30 year period. I went back to see him the next day. First he told me it was the first he heard about it, hey, then he said I was only temporary, I said I didn’t work my whole shift, he said well temp can mean anything from 1 day to 2 months. but I did not even work my whole shift. He then said we over hired and let 5 of you go. He did not know tha I had come back about 20 minuets early to see who was at work that day. I could hear the head remodel people asking where I was and was I not here and that I worked very good yesterday. I checked back to see when they all left and then I wen up to wait and talk to Rick. While I was waiting one of the head remodel persons came back asked where had I been, why did I know show? anymore. he said did they let you go, I said yes, he said why, I said I am here to find out why. he said good. I don’t know what they are doing around here, I get someone for you, I said I am waiting for Rick.
I am going to do some deep hunting about this situation. I believe you are right about the deception of WalMart. They have great benefits on paper but you have to work long enought to get them AND not receiving any other form of aid that gives them a tax credit. I do believe that is why they have 3 areas of age range and list 12 different kinds of aid that give them a tax credit. They eliminate people over 40 and if you receive 1 or more forms of tax aid credit for them, you need very little if any benefits at all.
Of the 5 let go 4 of us were over 40 the 5 I think was what we call in the education system a trainable mentally challenged person.
I am organizing my information and I will be sending in out to any and everyone I can.
I made copies of my papers and the application itself. I do believe it is illegal to ask age other than being over 18.
